NYS Police Superintendent resigns amid allegations

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State Police Superintendent Kevin Bruen submitted his resignation Friday, according to News10NBC’s partner station in WNYT of Albany.

This comes amid controversy stemming from allegations that Bruen shielded a former human resources director from internal scrutiny because of their close working relationship.

A statement from NYS Police said that First Deputy Superintendent Steven Nigrelli will become the acting superintendent.

Bruen took over leadership 15 months ago after serving as the deputy superintendent. He was named by then-governor Andrew Cuomo as the head of the agency in 2021.

In a statement, Gov. Kathy Hochul said: “Today I accepted the resignation of State Police Superintendent Kevin Bruen. I thank him for his years of public service. First Deputy Superintendent Steven Nigrelli will serve as Acting Superintendent on an interim basis, as we conduct a thorough search for a Superintendent who can lead this department in its important work. The State Police have made tremendous progress in combating gun violence and keeping New Yorkers safe, and that must continue.”
