Gun buyback event postponed to April

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Latino Youth Development and Resource Center is partnering with the Upper Room Family Worship Center for a gun buyback event ultimately help reduce violent crime. It was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but will now be postponed to early April.

UPDATE: A ribbon cutting event is scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at 980 N. Clinton Ave. That ceremony is for the newly formed Latino Youth Development and Resource Center.

The top priority of the LYD is to prevent gun violence, but they will also provide access to conflict resolution sessions and mental health, among other programs.

Last May, there was a major gun buyback, as 2021 saw the most violent year on record for Rochester. In that event, the city partnered with the Attorney General’s Office. 270 guns were collected in one of the largest gun buybacks the AG’s office had ever seen.

Since 2019, the AG’s office reports that close to 1,000 guns have been collected in Rochester. That number should eclipse the thousand mark Tuesday.

Any guns – registered or unregistered, legal or illegal, are accepted. No questions are asked and everything is anonymous. All you have to do is show up and drop off a weapon.
