ROC Airport Gets Another $18m in State Funding

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport has been awarded an $18 million grant from New York State to complete a series of renovations.  The money comes just a few years after it finished a nearly $80 million renovation funded by federal, state and local tax dollars.    

Rochester is one of nine Upstate airports to split a pot of $230 million in awards for revitalization projects that Governor Kathy Hochul says, “reimagine and further modernize airports.”

Rochester Airport Director Andy Moore tells News10NBC the money will fund 16 different projects at the airport, “the arrivals level is still very dark and sterile looking so, we are looking at completely refreshing that area to complement the rest of the airport,” he says.

There’s also work intended to help make the passenger experience smoother, “we’re looking at some baggage claim improvements to make getting your bags more efficient, but we’re also looking at a new app for the airport that can help passengers navigate the airport and help pre-pay for parking, things like that,” he explains.

And speaking of parking, “in some of the garages you’ve got green lights that point you to where open spaces are, we’re going to be developing that here at our parking garage to help passengers quickly and efficiently find a parking space in the garage and then get to the ticket counter as fast as they can,” Moore says. 

Several of the other projects slated involve improvements that won’t be visible to passengers like heating and cooling systems, airport operations and other facility improvements.
