Apple AirTags warning from AG’s office

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Attorney General Letitia James is warning people about malicious users attaching AirTags to cars, purses, coat pockets, and other items to track them.

Some people have given reports of notifications popping up with their location information being shared, but they are not able to locate the tracking device that may be sharing their location.

AirTags are meant to help people locate their own items, but reports have shown bad intentions with people using them to track or stalk other people.

The AG’s office says to be alert for unfamiliar beeping, try and remove the battery, and write down any serial numbers or information about an unknown tag. They also say to call the police if you need help with any of it.

"I urge all New Yorkers to pay close attention to their belongings and follow the tips provided by my office to stay safe," James said.

Apple has also said they plan on adding new features to help combat this problem.

People with Android phones can download the ‘Tracker Detect’ app from the Google Play Store. The app can help determine if there are any AirTags near you if you hear beeping.
