Local lawmakers, highway departments call for more funding for upstate
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Lawmakers and public highway departments from Livingston, Ontario and Wayne counties came together Thursday to ask Gov. Kathy Hochul where their funding is.
Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes (R, 133), State Sen. Pam Helming (R, 54), Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan (R, 131) and Assemblyman Brian Manktelow (R, 130) were there.
They said most of the money for infrastructure went to downstate programs, leaving nothing for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), which funds local roads and bridges, did not see any boost in funding.
Helming (R, 54) said the decision will disproportionately affect rural communities.
"When it comes to parity with downstate, upstate is always on the short end of the stick," Helming said. "There is a $2 billion difference between what NYC will see as proposed by the budget versus Upstate New York."

The rally was held ahead of the Joint Budget Hearing on Transportation, which is scheduled to be held virtually on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
