Social activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Opal Lee led a 2.5-mile walk through Fort Worth, Texas, in honor of the holiday on Saturday.

Dr. Lee is also referred to as "the grandmother of Juneteenth.” She helped to lead a movement to make it an official federal holiday, and it finally occurred on June 17, 2021.

She began her walking campaign at the age of 90 and has since continued her mission to educate others on the holiday.

The 2.5-mile walk was held to represent the 2.5 years it took for the enforcement of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas.
