Gates PD: Passenger killed in overnight crash, driver charged

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A person is dead and a Rochester man is charged with vehicular manslaughter in the second degree and driving while intoxicated after a car accident Sunday morning.

According to Gates PD, shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, police responded to the 1600 block of Chili Avenue for a report of a car crash.

When officers arrived, they found a car that had left the road and hit a utility pole as well as an occupied parked car that was in someone’s driveway.

Police said the person inside the car was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Afterward, he was taken to the Gates Police Department.

Police have charged the driver, 26-year-old Torzell McCloud of Rochester with second degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and multiple and traffic infractions.

Police said McCloud was arraigned in Gates Town Court and is now in Monroe County Jail.

The identity of the passenger is being withheld as police work to notify the family.
