New Jersey Jets and Giants? Lawsuit filed against New York’s two "out-of-state" NFL teams

NEW YORK, N.Y. (WHEC) — A lawsuit has been filed against the New York Jets and New York Giants, stating that both teams are damaging fans by using ‘New York’ with home base actually being across the river in New Jersey.

According to the lawsuit, "If the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Liberty, Rangers, and other New York franchises must play in New York and pay premium real estate costs and taxes to be branded a “New York” (“NY”) sports franchise, it is only fair that the NFL Giants and Jets do the same or change their name to accurately reflect the location of their stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey."

The lawsuit also points to the fact that other NFL teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Football Team, and San Francisco 49ers, don’t actually play in those cities. For example, the Football Team plays in nearby Landover, Maryland.

However, part of that is more so due to the size of an NFL stadium and fitting it downtown. The Buffalo Bills currently play in Orchard Park. This lawsuit says the value of these franchises would decrease significantly if that had to use the exact location instead of the nearby metro.

Altogether, the plaintiff is asking for the New York Jets and Giants to return to play in NY state by 2025 while also changing their names to "New Jersey Giants/Jets or East Rutherford Giants/Jets" if they continue to play in New Jersey, as well as be awarded monetary damages of $2 billion and punitive damages of $4 billion.
