ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — There have been some passing sprinkles and wet flurries near Lake Ontario – especially east of Rochester, but overall our weather has been uneventful as we close out the Christmas weekend.

We look to the west by Monday where a weakening area of low pressure will be approaching the Great Lakes. The News10NBC First Alert meteorologists expect some unsettled weather to develop by Monday afternoon. With temperatures in the 30s, it will be just cold enough for some light snow showers to arrive. It then appears this snow may mix with some ice pellets and eventually change to just rain by the end of the day. Little or no accumulation is expected as the temperature will rise well above freezing and eventually reach the upper 30s by the end of the day.

Tuesday will be mainly cloudy, breezy and dry. It will be mild for late December as the mercury will rise into the low 40s. However, a second Midwest low-pressure system will be approaching by Tuesday night. This storm is likely to have the most of the impact closer to the southern tier of New York State. Look for a few snow showers with possibly an inch of snow accumulation south of Rochester. The temperature will fall into the low 30s.

We are looking for mainly dry conditions for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. So we have some calm and tranquil weather to finish 2021. The temperature will range from the mid-30s to mid-40s during the daylight hours. New Year’s Eve weather should also be uneventful with dry conditions and a temperature near 30 degrees.

The new year will begin with mild temperatures again with readings in the 40s and rain developing by the afternoon on Saturday. Probably the biggest concern through the entire forecast period will be the end of the weekend and early next week. It is still too early to be definitive, but there is the chance of a more impactful storm for the northeast. We still have lots of uncertainty in the forecast when it comes to the timing and path of this storm, but there will be a changeover to snow with wind and sharply colder weather possible. The News10 NBC First Alert meteorologists will keep you updated on-the-air, online and the News10NBC weather app in the coming days.
