First Alert Weather: The year will end with very little winter weather

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — As we expected, it was not a White Christmas here in Western New York.

The Rochester Airport officially had a measurement of just a trace of snow at 7 a.m. this morning. The criteria for the “White Christmas” is at least one inch of snow at 7 a.m.

It was rainy with plenty of green grass showing for this Saturday morning with mild temperatures. This year, most of the active winter weather has been located out West and specifically over the Pacific Northwest. Mother Nature provided a snowy scene for the residents of near Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon.

Looking ahead to the upcoming week, the News10NBC First Alert meteorologists see very little weather of any real consequence. A trough of low pressure will linger across the area tonight and into Sunday. Rain showers will taper off for this late evening and may end as some wet flurries. The temperature will be falling into the mid-30s by morning. Sunday will bring mainly gray skies with the chance of passing flurries or a wet snow shower. Little or no accumulation is expected for the day. The high temperature on Sunday will be in the mid to upper 30s.

A low-pressure system will develop over the Midwest on Monday and push a warm front towards the eastern Great Lakes. That means the temperature is going up again with the mercury moving close to 40 degrees on Tuesday and 45 degrees on Wednesday. Any precipitation will be limited to a few sprinkles on Tuesday and just a passing rain shower on Wednesday. Thursday looks calm and tranquil with mainly cloudy skies and the temperature falling back into the mid-30s.

It appears we will be ringing in the new year with more uneventful weather. Friday will feature clouds and limited sunshine with maybe a few snow flurries. Temperatures will be in the mid-30s. New Year’s Day could bring a late-day rain shower with the temperature nearing 40 degrees.
