Monroe County Sheriff’s Office recognizes above-and-beyond response to Rush rollover crash

RUSH, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday recognized two of its law enforcement officers who went above and beyond responding to a rollover crash in Rush back in October.

The single-car crash happened on Saturday, Oct. 23 on 390 at around 10:30 p.m. Deputies say the car flipped over and the driver was trapped.

Deputy Justin Overend responded and Deputy Caitlin Toomey, who has since been promoted to Sergeant, stayed with the driver for a half-hour, holding his hand and speaking to him to keep him calm and let him know what was happening while crews with Rush Fire and Brighton Ambulance worked to free him.

Firefighters used airbags to flip the vehicle and get it off the driver. He was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook saying, “We would like to recognize the compassion displayed by Deputies Caitlin Toomey and Justin Overend when assisting with an MVA Rollover on 10/23/21. The rescue could not have been possible without the expertise of the Rush Fire Dept./EMS and Brighton Ambulance. True public servants in our community.”
