ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rochester Police say a man is in custody after they say he drove, then ran from officers near the Port of Rochester Wednesday morning.
RPD initially went to a suspicious vehicle call on Clio Street around 8:30 a.m., after neighbors called to say a Jeep had been parked there with the engine running since 5 a.m. with someone inside of it.
When officers got there, they determined the Jeep had been stolen out of Irondequoit. RPD says an officer tried to make contact with the driver, but then he drove off down Beach Avenue, then crashed into a tree.
Police say the man then ran away from the Jeep, which started a foot chase, though he ended up running right into a K-9 training unit, where he was arrested. Officers did not release a name but said the man is 21 years old.
"I think the bigger story out of this is if you see something out of the normal go ahead and give us a call, it’s always worth checking out, " RPD Lieutenant Timothy Pancoe said. "A lot of times if you have an intuition on something just give us a call and we’ll be happy to come down, check it out, and in this case, whoever the caller was, their intuition was correct."
Police say the man was not seriously hurt. No specific charges were mentioned.
