Lockport City Schools turn to remote learning due to recent social media threats

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WHEC) — Wednesday began a stretch of remote learning for students in Lockport City School District following recent threats made against the district online.

The district will stay remote through Friday.

The city’s police department posted Tuesday the move was based on concerns from parents, as well as the chance to give the district time to plan and put forward more safety measures. Police also said the time away will allow investigators, including federal law enforcement, to take a closer look at the threats.

The specific threat was not detailed, though LPD did say the posts contained "potential threats" against the high school and staff.

Lockport High School went remote Tuesday due to the threats. A post on the district’s website thanked the community for the "many tips" sent to the district and police.

Recently, threats have caused concern at local schools. Notably, the Batavia School District closed its buildings last Friday due to social media threats. Security had to be ramped up Greece Acardia High School after a threat was made. A concerned community member sent News10NBC a picture of what looks like a “kill list” posted on Snapchat. Rush-Henrietta also dealt with a "vague" threat that led to an increased police presence.

As for Lockport, a decision on a return to class next week will be made by Friday afternoon.
