First Alert Weather: Uneventful weekend weather, followed by high winds Monday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Good news/bad news: The good news – if you need to do outdoor chores this weekend, the weather will cooperate for the most part. The bad news – we have another round of high winds in the forecast on Monday for most of Western New York.

The details: Saturday will feature some breaks of sun, and nothing more than a passing rain or wet snow shower. Temperatures should flirt with 40, but a busy wind will make it feel chillier. In fact, we may see a few gusts 30-35 mph on Saturday. This won’t be enough to knock down any power lines. Sunday will be another mainly dry day, with some sun to start, followed by increasing clouds. Winds will tend to pick up during the evening and overnight, with some gusts to 40 mph possible, mainly in the higher terrain of the Finger Lakes. Outside of the high peaks, we’ll just feel a typical breeze.

That will change on Monday.

A Yellow Alert is up for Monday for expected high winds. Monday starts off mild and wet with rain showers and temperatures in the 50s, plus winds gusting to 30-40 mph. Again, this shouldn’t be enough to cause widespread issues, but, a strong cold front comes through midday, dropping our temperatures quickly into the 30s, with winds quickly ramping up.

Gusts are expected 40-50 mph for a few hours in the Finger Lakes during the afternoon/evening, and the strongest gusts west of Rochester may reach 50-60 mph. If winds reach this magnitude, some power outages are possible Monday afternoon and evening. The strongest winds will tend to die down quickly Monday night, with a chillier breeze by Tuesday. Some lake effect snow will get going Monday evening off of Lake Erie, which may drop a minor accumulation well south of Rochester. If you’re planning on heading to Orchard Park for the Bills game Monday night, plan for strong winds, chilly air and some lake snow.

Tuesday will see any lake snow ending, with another chance for some area-wide light snow on Wednesday with minor accumulations possible. Look for continued updates from the First Alert Weather Team. Meteorologists Alex Bielfeld and Glenn Johnson will have you covered this weekend.
