Crisis counselors help students at School 17

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Grief counselors were inside Enrico Fermi School 17 Monday, comforting classmates of two young kids who died in a horrific crash, the day before Thanksgiving.

The Rochester School District told News10NBC that they had eight trauma, illness, and grief team members providing support to classmates of 11-year old Jadden Desu and 4-year-old Ja’vion Green-Rucker. The two brothers along with a third sibling who survived the crash all went to school 17.

The crash happened near the intersection of Lyell Avenue and Mount Read Boulevard. The 8-year-old boy who was seriously hurt, is home from the hospital and recovering. Both drivers had minor injuries. One of them was the children’s mother, who is also home.

The family says they’re overwhelmed with the amount of love and support they’ve seen from the community. Rochester School district leaders say, Monday was a somber day for the school 17 community.

"School was very quiet, there were students, in the upper grade that were very upset, some of them did hear it for the first time. For the younger students we are working with families to help them share the information with their children,” Marisol Ramos-Lopez said, the Chief of Communications for RCSD.

The district says those counselors are always available but will be present inside school 17 all week.

Investigators are still working to find out what specifically played a role in the crash, but they did rule out alcohol and drugs. Police are working with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office in determining what charges, if any, would be pressed.

Funeral services for the children who were killed will be held this weekend.
