First Alert Weather: Lake flakes return tonight & Friday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Our cold front is through, and you can feel the difference! The 50s are long gone, and we’ll continue to drop into the 30s tonight.

Lake effect will get going off of Lake Erie tonight, mainly impacting the Southern Tier counties and a coating to an inch or two of snow in parts of Wyoming and southern Livingston counties. Some flakes may stretch into the southern Finger Lakes Friday morning before dropping south with another wind shift. This shift will allow some lake effect to then get going off of Lake Ontario. Temperatures will be just marginal for some snow, so we’ll likely see a mix of rain/wet snow and graupel off and on for our Lake Ontario counties

Friday, with nothing more than a coating possible on grassy and elevated surfaces. Temperatures remain well above freezing during the day, so there shouldn’t be any issues on roads. Winds will be a bit gusty, too, with some gusts 30 mph to 35 mph at times, making it feel chillier.

The weekend: Saturday still looks nice, with some sun and dry weather. Sunday starts off dry, but some showers will be working in from west to east during the day. So, if you’re heading out to the Bills game in Orchard Park, plan on a bit of wet weather. Rain should hold off until the afternoon closer to Rochester. This is the same system that will bring us some accumulating snow early next week.

In fact, a Yellow Alert is now up for Tuesday, for some localized lake effect snow and gusty winds producing areas of blowing snow. The details: rain changes over to a little wet snow on Monday, but any area-wide accumulation should be inconsequential. Then, as colder air wraps in, lake effect will get going. Amounts shouldn’t be overly impressive, but the Tuesday morning commute may be impacted a little bit, and those traveling early for Thanksgiving should stay up to date on the forecast details, especially if you plan on traveling the Thruway. Lake snow will taper by Wednesday morning, leaving us with better weather for the big travel day, and mainly dry weather for Thanksgiving Day itself. We may have another shot at some snow by late next week and into the weekend.
