First Alert Weather: Mild air returns for one day Wednesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Lingering lake effect will finally end tonight, and we’ll shake the chillier air, for a day.

Wednesday starts off with chilly air, as temperatures hover near freezing. But, a warm front lifting through will bump our temperatures into the 50s through the afternoon, with some spots making a run at 60 by late in the evening. The air will warm thanks to a strong southerly wind of 10-20 mph. That wind will also keep us mild overnight. In fact, temperatures will likely hold in the 50s until Thursday morning. A strong cold front slicing through the area will drop our temperatures into the lower 40s by evening. This will also come down showers through the afternoon, then tend to taper.

It’ll turn chilly enough for a minor lake response Thursday night into Friday, with the best chance of a minor accumulation coming south of Buffalo and east of Lake Ontario. So, don’t expect much across the Rochester area. Highs on Friday will drop back into the 40s again with a brisk wind.

The weekend: Saturday still looks great (for November standards) if you are out and about. It’ll be a bit cool, with highs in the 40s, but dry with some sun. Showers will develop later on Sunday as we eye our next storm system.

There are still lots of details to be ironed out with this next system, but computer guidance is starting to come into better agreement on rain changing over to at least some wet snow on Monday. This will be followed by chillier air and some lake effect snow, and perhaps some snow squalls.

The exact precipitation type, timing and amounts are still up in the air, but a Yellow Alert may be needed leading up to Thanksgiving if the weather is expected to impact holiday travel. The First Alert Weather Team will be on top of the very latest forecasts and will pass along updates on-air and online.
