Troopers: Man killed in Farmington crash was son of deadly carjacking victim

FARMINGTON, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State Police say one of the men seriously hurt in a crash last week has died.

Troopers say 53-year-old Richard Sciascia, from Rochester, died from injuries Tuesday night.

Sciascia was riding in a car last Monday when troopers say 32-year-old Jeffrey Shinsing crashed into the back of the car on Route 332 and Collett Road. Police say Shinsing was drunk and speeding at the time.

He was charged with DWI, first-degree vehicular assault, and several traffic violations.

Troopers later confirmed Sciascia is the son of 71-year-old Richard Sciascia, of Irondequoit, who was shot and killed in a carjacking in Gates back on April 7.

The driver of the car Sciascia was in, a 62-year-old man from Rochester, was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday.

Troopers say more charges are now pending against Shinsing.

Gates Police Wednesday released the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Sciascia Family on the death of Richard Sciascia Jr. He was the passenger in a vehicle struck by a drunk driver on November 1st while in Ontario County. The driver of the vehicle, William Lovetro, remains in critical condition and needs our prayers.

"The other motorist, Jeffrey Shinsing, has been charged with DWI.

"Richard Sciascia Sr. was murdered in Gates on April 7th during an attempted car jacking. We will continue to support these families during this tragedy."
