Hochul signs bills simed to crack down on robocalls

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gov. Kathy Hochul Monday signed a package of bills aimed at strengthening efforts to block those calls from coming to your phone.

One bill requires telecommunication companies to block robocalls from certain numbers to prevent unwanted robocalls across additional providers.

The other bill requires providers to make sure a call is actually coming from the number that shows up on your caller id using a system called STIR/SHAKEN. This is intended to crack down on “spoofed” spam calls, where spammers imitate a legitimate number in hopes of getting people to pick up.
