Man accused of stabbing RPD officer Wright officer given 2nd opinion on plea deal

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— The man accused of stabbing Rochester Police Officer Denny Wright two years ago is getting a second opinion before any potential plea deal is reached.

Keith Williams was in court again Wednesday morning for a hearing, as prosecutors say they were ready to make a deal. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley says the deal they had prepared included a guilty plea to aggravated assault on a police officer.

Instead, the court appointed a new lawyer to review the evidence in the case and advise Williams on how to proceed.

Police say Willaims attacked Wright at a home on Peck Street in October 2019. Wright was released from the hospital three weeks later but is now blind.

Back in August, Williams was deemed competent to stand trial. His attorney and family members claimed Williams can’t aid in his own defense and has suffered from mental health problems.

Wednesday’s decision left Doorley "surprised and confused."

"I’ve never seen it in my 30 years of being a prosecutor," Doorley said. "Every day we’re hoping he’s competent, there are issues. He came out into court today and requested medication, so we’re hoping the jail will comply with that and we can get him to admit his guilt in court."

She says the deal could lead to significant time in state prison. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for Dec. 1.
