Some RCSD teachers favor the return of Rochester police officers in schools

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — After another violent outbreak in a city school, the teachers union is calling for immediate action to get the most disruptive students out.

Teachers are stepping up in trying to create safety solutions for their students. One teacher, who was recently attacked by one of her students, says school support officers just aren’t enough.

"If teachers aren’t safe, then neither is your child,” said Adam Urbanski, president of the Rochester Teachers Association.

"I truly believe that police officers should be back in the buildings,” said Ruth Card, a Special ED teacher at Franklin High School.

Card tried to break up a student on student fight last week inside Franklin High School and was hurt in the process. She says bringing back the Rochester Police Department might be the answer.

"They need to be able to talk to the police officers, to not feel threatened. I think if we develop some type of program for these kids – to interact with officer – things would get better,” Card told News10NBC.

RCSD unions are pushing for security resource officers along with increased school safety officers. RTA says teachers shouldn’t be caught in crosshairs.

"Most of the violence is student-on-student violence, and the adults at the school bravely intervene and get hurt in the process,” Urbanski added.

Urbanski says the district wants to continue having "committees" where they create awareness and talk about solutions. He says "conversations" will keep schools a haven for violence.

"Parents should know that when they’re sending their child to a school, at the very least, that child will be safe. There is an appropriate role for police especially when criminal behavior is occurring, no question about it whatsoever,” Urbanski said.
