First Alert Weather: Storms tonight lead into a Friday chill

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Wet weather has made a return to WNY, and this is the beginning of the end of our most recent bout of mild October air.

A strong cold front moving in late this evening will bring with it a thin line of thunderstorms. The severe threat is fairly low, but a few of these storms could produce gusty wind and small hail as they move through. This line of storms should move into Western New York around sunset, and exit the Finger Lakes before midnight. This will be followed by much cooler air, with temperatures dropping back through the 50s into the 40s by Friday morning, and that is likely where we’ll stay for much of the day. A lot of Friday will be dry, but a few scattered lake-enhanced rain showers are likely as colder air filters in.

The weekend: We’re still looking at a very fall-like weekend, with daytime temperatures in the 40s much of the time, likely hitting the lower 50s for a few hours during the afternoon. Much like Friday, it’ll be cool enough for a few lake rain showers, but much of the weekend will be dry.

We’re entering a fairly unsettled weather pattern as we get into next week, with several storm systems parading through western New York, originating from the western United States. The first looks to arrive on Tuesday, with a stronger storm on Thursday. At this early viewpoint, severe weather isn’t expected, but we’ll see frequent showers and rounds of rain.

We’ll work on fine-tuning the timing through the weekend.
