ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning Americans about a salmonella outbreak linked to onions.

More than 800 people have gotten sick in 37 states, including at least a dozen people in New York.

The CDC has linked the outbreak to red, white and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed by ProSource, but investigators are still working to determine if onions from other suppliers are also linked.

The CDC says they’ve been sold to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the U.S.

If you don’t know where onions are from, the CDC says don’t buy or eat them.

If your onions were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed by ProSource, throw them out and wash and sanitize any surface they may have come into contact with.
