Kumang the orangutan, formerly of Seneca Park Zoo, passes away after dental surgery at Zoo Miami

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Seneca Park Zoo is mourning the loss of Kumang, a female Bornean orangutan.

Kumang came to the Seneca Park Zoo in 1991 and gave birth to four offspring there. She was sent to Zoo Miami in 2018 as part of the Orangutan Species Survival Plan.

Zoo Miami shared on Facebook that Kumang was 44 when she died Thursday. The zoo said she was recovering from anesthesia following a dental procedure.

Zoo Miami said she had two damaged teeth that were causing an infection extracted, and that the procedure went as planned, without any complications.

The zoo said her behavior appeared normal while she was recovering until she went into a recumbent position and stopped breathing for reasons it still doesn’t know.

Zoo Miami said medical teams attempted several emergency procedures, including CPR, but were not able to revive her.

The zoo said it will perform a necropsy Friday in hopes of determining the cause of her death.

Kumang leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter named Bella who lives in Zoo Miami. Her other children include sons Bandar and Datu and daughter Dara.
