ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Police Department is investigating the vandalism of the Daniel Prude mural on 52 Child St. as a hate crime.

The mural is right outside of the home of Joe Prude, Daniel’s brother.

Daniel Prude died when he was taken off of life support on March 30, 2020, seven days after he was restrained and handcuffed by Rochester Police officers. The Medical Examiner ruled that he died from complications of asphyxia due to physical restraint, excited delirium and PCP.

Police say they were made aware of the crime at around 8 p.m. Friday, but they don’t know when it occurred.

The mural was partially covered with spray paint according to police.

RPD says it has notified the New York State Police Hate Crimes Task Force.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
