Former mechanic who worked on State Police cars accused of stealing $24K in equipment

ONEIDA, N.Y. (WHEC) — A former mechanic trusted to work on State Police cars has admitted to stealing more than $24,000 in equipment from the state.

The New York State Comptroller says 64-year-old David Relyea of Canastota took parts and supplies between 2015 and 2020.

He was responsible for maintaining police vehicles for the Troop D headquarters based in Oneida.

Relyea also owns an auto repair business, which the comptroller’s office said he used the parts he stole to subsidize.
