UPDATE: Medina FD says building with four-alarm fire not in immediate danger of collapsing

UPDATE: The Medina Fire Department said the building is not in immediate danger of collapsing. Crews are working to make sure the building stays standing. Fire crews are still chasing hot spots in building, but are having problems accessing them.

MFD said traffic is still shut down from Park to North Avenues. They’re hoping to open the roads by Sunday afternoon.

ORLEANS COUNTY, N.Y. – A man is expected to be okay after firefighters rescued him from his burning business.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. in a sandstone building on Main Street, south of East Center Street and north of Starr Street. It turned into a four-alarm fire. Crews will be on scene 24/7 through the end of the week.

“We’ve got resources from the tri-county area pulled in right now, actually I think four counties,” Medina Fire Dept. Lt. Steven Cooley said. “Monroe County has some units stationed, like I said Niagara County, Genesee County units. Like I said this is by far the biggest fire in Orleans in recent history I can recall and I’ve been here 13 years.”

Firefighters rescued the owner from a second-story window. He was checked out at the scene and did not need to be taken to the hospital. The structure, which dates to 1901, houses Hugh D. Fuller Carpet. It’s unknown whether it is salvageable.

“This is my dad’s pride and joy, this building, so it’s pretty sad that it’s…. hopefully, they can restore it somehow. Hopefully, it doesn’t have to be torn down,” Melissa Dewey, the owner’s daughter, said.

“I would just like to thank all the firefighters that are here today and especially the ones that pulled my dad out. I’d like to thank them.”
