First Alert Weather: Back to the heat and humidity

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Today makes almost two weeks in a row with above normal temperatures for Rochester.

We expect the air conditioners will be humming right through the remainder of the weekend.

Tonight will bring more hazy, warm, and humid weather as the temperature will only fall to near 70° There is just a slight chance of a thundershower overnight.

Your Sunday will feature partial sunshine with a slightly better chance of a passing shower or thundershower. But we should make the point that there will be significant periods of dry weather throughout the day. Expect more steamy conditions for Sunday with the temperature in the mid-80s and dew point in the low 70s. That should push the heat index into the mid-90s to finish the weekend.

Finally, a cold front will be approaching Western New York and this will eventual bring some relief. However, a significant reduction in the heat and humidity will not occur until late Monday and Monday night. Another round of showers and thundershowers is possible into Monday morning with the passage of the front, but much drier air will arrive for the remainder of the workweek.

If you have been waiting for some consistency to the comfortable weather, your wait will be over by Tuesday.

The News10NBC First Alert Weather Team is forecasting four consecutive days of lower humidity and refreshing temperatures starting on Tuesday and continuing through Friday. Temperatures during the day will be in the 70s and mercury will fall into the 50s during the nighttime hours.

The big weather story this week is not in Western New York. Hurricane Ida is now nearing the Louisiana coast as a category 2 hurricane with more strengthening likely. Tropical force winds are expected to develop tomorrow and damaging winds are likely by Sunday evening near the city of New Orleans with gusts possibly exceeding 90 mph or more.

Massive flooding is expected with 10 inches or more of rainfall and storm surge. By early next week, major power outages will be likely for portions of Louisiana and Alabama. At this point, we expect the remnants of Ida will pass well south of Western New York, but the News10NBC First Alert meteorologists will be tracking the storm and will bring you the latest.
