Report: FDA aiming to give full approval to Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Monday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is pushing to approve Pfizer’s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine on Monday according to a New York Times report.

The Times is citing people familiar with the agency’s planning and an FDA spokesperson declined their request for comment.

The outlet is reporting that regulators were working to finish the approval process by Friday but paperwork and negotiations with the company pushed the process beyond Friday and could push the process further back than Monday if parts of the application need further review.

Currently, the Pfizer vaccine is the only one of the three vaccines that the FDA has granted emergency use authorization to that is authorized to be administered to people as young as 12.

Earlier this week, U.S. health agencies gave emergency use authorization to a third-dose booster shot of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The national-level rollout is expected to start on Sept. 20.
