US extends border closure with Canada until at least Sept. 21

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel and ferry crossings with Canada until at least Sept. 21, according to U.S. Homeland Security.

U.S Homeland Security says the decision was made to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the delta variant.

In coordination with public health and medical experts, DHS continues working closely with its partners across the United States and internationally to determine how to safely and sustainably resume normal travel.

Canada announced it would waive its quarantine requirement for U.S. citizens who have been fully vaccinated starting on Aug. 9.

Children who have not been vaccinated, but whose parents have, are allowed to cross the border without quarantining but will have to avoid group activities.

When Canada opened its side of the border to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens, the U.S. did not open its side of the border to Canadian citizens, but Americans are permitted to come back to the U.S. after visiting Canada.
