First Alert Weather: Tropical Storm Henri takes aim at the Northeast this weekend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Our weekend will be fairly uneventful here in western New York, but Tropical Storm Henri continues to strengthen as it turns to the north.

The forecast track takes this into Long Island and southern New England as a strong Tropical Storm or Category 1 hurricane by Sunday into Monday. Hurricane and Tropical Storm Watches are posted along the coast. We expect to see very little impact from this, with the track of it staying well east of us.

That being said, a little moisture may be thrown back at us late Sunday into Monday with some tropical downpours and thunder possible Monday. Backing up to Saturday across Western New York: We should start off dry with a mostly cloudy sky. Scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder are possible into the afternoon, especially south and east of Rochester in the Finger Lakes, closer to an upper-level disturbance. The weekend will be far from a washout, but you may be dodging a few drops, especially on Saturday.

Next week: Summer is still in full swing, with temperatures well into the 80s for much of next week, possibly flirting with 90 by Tuesday or Wednesday. Humidity isn’t going anywhere, either. Dew points will hold in the upper 60s and lower 70s, making it feel quite uncomfortable at times. With this moisture in the air, overnight lows will have a hard time dropping below the upper 60s for much of next week. Rain and storm chances will go up by Thursday and Friday of next week with the slow passage of a weak cold front. If you don’t love the steamy summer air, some drier air will try to nudge south from eastern Canada by next weekend, but there are growing signs that this may make it in, and we stay warm and humid.
