One dead in house fire on Kenwood Avenue

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Rochester fire officials confirmed a person died in a house fire on the city’s westside.

Neighbors told News10NBC the house on Kenwood Avenue was engulfed in flames when firefighters got there. The two-story home is all that’s left and a family is grieving tonight. Ten fire companies responded, but they were too late.

Fire officials confirm a person got trapped inside and a body was found on the first floor. Rochester firefighters were called around 4:45 p.m. Thursday. It took about 45 minutes to completely extinguish the fire. Ladder trucks, other fire units, and paramedics were on scene blocking both ends of the street.

London Graham, who lives just a few houses down said once he noticed the flames, he and another friend ran to the home to do what they could to save anyone inside.

“I just saw a lot of smoke,” Graham said. “A lot of smoke coming from down the street. So we just immediately ran down there to see what was going on. Right when I got to the back of the house, the back down was open and two people came running out of the back door coughing and stuff. When firefighters got there, I let them know, I said there is a lady in there on those stairs. And they just went in and I assume it was just a little too late.”

The name of the person who died has not yet been released but there appeared to be a lot of distraught family members in and around the house while investigators were working to collect information.
