ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) —The second man accused of shooting and killing a 16-year-old Tuesday pled not guilty to murder charges.

31-year-old Johnny Rodriguez made the plea when he was arraigned in Rochester City Court Tuesday morning.

Police say he and Douglas Smith got into an argument on Hague Street Saturday night, the argument ultimately led to a shootout. 16-year-old Manuel Rivera was shot and killed after being caught in the crossfire.

Smith also pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday. Prosecutors say having witnesses come forward could play a big role in the case.

"Having the involvement of the community coming forward just telling us what you know, telling us what you see is absolutely critical," Assistant District Attorney Adam Van Heyst said. "Especially in times like these when we see these incidents are occurring on a regular basis. we need the community to continue to come forward."

The next hearing for Rodriguez is scheduled for Thursday.
