Yellow Alert once again for the potential for flash flooding

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The News10NBC First Alert Weather Team has issued a Yellow Alert for Tuesday afternoon.

There is a growing potential for showers and thunderstorms for most of Western New York with the greatest threat coming from pockets of heavy, torrential rain.

However, the fast-moving storms may limit the total amount of rainfall, but the complicating factors are that the water levels of area creeks are still running very high and the ground is still saturated. It will not take much rain to push us towards some flash flooding.

It should be noted that lightning and gusty winds are also a factor through the afternoon and evening. We have lots of humidity in place, and with the main trigger for storm development in the form of a cold front, the potential for severe weather is greater than usual. When the front moves south of Rochester later Tuesday night most of the heavy storms will move east with conditions improving by the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Once the cold front clears Western New York on Wednesday we expect much more comfortable conditions to return to Rochester. The chance for rain will diminish quickly and it may be time to open the windows and let the fresh air in! Expect more sunshine, comfortable temperatures and much lower amounts of humidity through later Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

A Yellow Alert is our way of giving a "heads up" to pay close attention to what could be a very changeable and impactful weather day.
