City is launching app to report public safety concerns anonymously

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The city is launching an app to anonymously report non-emergency public safety concerns.

Mayor Malik Evans made the announcement about the app called REPORTIT during a conference on Tuesday. He hopes residents will use the app to report information about illegal guns, domestic violence, and information to help identify suspects. The program will be available as a phone app and as a website.

Evans said the app doesn’t replace 911 but offers residents a place to safely report any information on crime. Users can send photos and videos through the app. Evans said the app won’t ever collect personal information from users.

Council member LaShay Harris said that, when she walks through neighborhoods, residents sometimes give her information about crimes such as illegal gun selling. She said the app will allow people with information to send it directly to the police.
