First Alert Weather: Starting the weekend off on a soggy note

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Yellow Alert remains up Saturday as a wave of heavy rain moves in. Generally light showers Friday night will transition to pockets of heavier rain by sunrise Saturday, and continue to slowly rotate through the area Saturday morning.

The Finger Lakes region may get a little break from the rain, while there’s a chance the Thruway corridor could stay in the steadier rain all day. This is where the potential exists for some of the higher rainfall amounts. One last wave of heavier rain should push through during the afternoon with a cold front. This batch may be accompanied by some thunder and gusty winds, primarily in the Finger Lakes.

In all, most of the region will see at least 1" of rain, many will see 1-2", with some localized amounts up to 3".

Because of this, we may see some flooding of low-lying areas, basements and the typical creeks and streams that see flooding during heavy rain events.

Rain pulls away Saturday night, leaving us with clouds Sunday morning, but we should see some clearing by afternoon. There remains a slight chance of a passing shower, but Sunday will easily be the better weekend day for outdoor activities.

We’ll return to the mid-80s next week, with an isolated thundershower Monday, and a better chance for some later day showers and thunder Tuesday as a cold front approaches. Early showers with a cold front on Wednesday should exit, leaving us with cooler air and lower humidity.
