DOH: Masks not required for summer school

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Students attending summer school won’t need to wear a mask, as the New York State Department of Health just changed its guidelines.

The DOH confirmed to News10NBC it sent a notice to districts saying it is now treating summer schools the same as summer camps, by encouraging face masks, but not mandating them. Districts can still require students to wear them.

To be clear, this does not mean students won’t need to wear masks in the fall, the rule only applies to summer schools.

New York plans to release fall school rules in the coming weeks.

News10NBC reached out to the Monroe County Health Department.

A spokesperson says Public Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza received the update from the state and passed it along to local district leadership.

The department is unaware of any districts reaching out to them about adopting the new guidance yet.

Monroe One BOCES tells us they’re not making immediate changes.

The BOCES communications coordinator told News10NBC administrators are currently reviewing the guidance and asking for clarification.
