ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two teens are in custody and another remains at large after Rochester Police say a robbery turned into a car chase that ended in a crash on Sunday.
It happened near the intersection of Interstate 590 and Elmwood Avenue around 4 p.m. Police say it all started on Broadway Street when two people stole a 69-year-old woman’s purse and punched the 70-year-old man she was with in the face.
Witnesses saw the suspects hop behind the wheel of a Kia which police found on the road just two hours later.
“Three juveniles actually took off on foot after the accident. Two of which were apprehended. We are still in search of the third,” said Rochester Police Lieutenant Joseph Perrone.
The crash shut down the southbound ramp for an hour as police found and arrested a 13-year-old and 14-year-old while conducting a search for the other teen who managed to get away.
“It exited the 590 expressway at a high rate of speed and crashed into the curb behind me on the south end,” Perrone said.
Julie Doyle who lives near where the chase ended said she was on her way home when she noticed around 30 squad cars outside her house. Police told her that she could not go inside due to an active crime scene.
“There’s a destroyed car over here. and three of them got away. They caught 2, one in my back yard. The other is still at large. The K-9s are still around the neighborhood right now,” Doyle said.
Doyle said that she keeps up with crime information via social media but never expected this to happen so close to home.
“Car theft has been happening for a long time and surrounding areas and downtown but right here, in front of my house, that was shocking,” Doyle said.
While the search continues for the third suspect, Lt. Perrone said nearby homeowners are not in any danger.
“The neighborhood still remains safe. We still would like any assistance from the neighborhood. if they notice anyone who doesn’t fit in the neighborhood or who is acting suspicious to please call us,” Perrone said.
