Good Question: What’s going on with the East Main Street construction?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— There’s a lot happening with some new work right in one of the busiest sections of the city. It covers a chunk of East Main Street.

So what’s going on?

Lydia asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers: There is a lot of road work on E. Main between Goodman Street and Culver Road. I just noticed that they’re also taking down all the roadside trees and leaving piles of ground-up stumps, are they going to plant new trees?

We’ll answer the tearing up trees part of this in a second.

But first, let’s address the biggest part of this project–the revitalization of East Main. This work runs from North Goodman to Culver, and it covers the Beechwood, EMMA, and Ace neighborhoods.

Crews are installing new pavement, a raised five-foot-wide cycle track on both sides, and that will be split from regular traffic. They are putting in new sidewalks, curbs and curb ramps, a mid-block crosswalk with a pedestrian island, and more.

As for Lydia’s questions about the trees, crews are taking out 67 of them and will go back and plant more than 100 new trees in their place.

The total cost for the work? Nearly $10 million. That is funded through federal, state, city, and county money.

The goal is to have this done by the fall of 2022.
