Good Question: Is the Polar Plunge still happening?

ROCHESTER, N.Y.(WHEC)— Here’s a Good Question about an annual winter tradition.

The Polar Plunge is one of THE events of the season, and for a good cause, as, every year hundreds of people brave the cold and frigid temps to hop into the freezing waters of Lake Ontario to support the Special Olympics of New York.

So, Joe asked us about this year’s event during a pandemic. He says: The Polar Plunge is taking place Sunday at Ontario Beach Park, why hasn’t it been canceled? Who gave it the green light?

For starters, this year’s event isn’t happening in person. It’s all virtual.

Organizers say for the first time in 21 years they want you to instead take a plunge in kiddie pools, have water balloon fights, go through sprinklers, really, anything else done safely at home to get covered with water in the cold. They want you to record all the fun, then send in your virtual plunge.

You can take the plunge and upload videos through March 14. You’re also asked to use the hashtag #PlungeNation.

The group will start sharing highlights from across Rochester starting this weekend.
