ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC celebrates Black History Month by honoring the people and places that have paved the way for many in the Rochester area.
Dr. Walter Cooper has spent years serving our area. He is best known for his time spent serving on the New York State Board of Regents.
Cooper has shown a long-time commitment to the education of young people in our area. Rochester City School No. 10 is named Dr. Walter Cooper Academy.
He came to Rochester for graduate school in the 1950s and became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Rochester.
