NEW ZEALAND — The U.S. National Team will play its first match in the 2023 Women’s World Cup against Vietnam on Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

The U.S. team is trying to earn a third straight World Cup title and is ranked number one overall. This year, the number of teams in the World Cup has increased from 24 to 32. Friday’s game at Eden Park Stadium in New Zealand will be first-ever world cup game for Vietnam for men’s or women’s
The U.S. roster will feature returning World Cup champions including forward Megan Rapinoe, forward Alex Morgan, midfielder Rose Lavelle, defender Crystal Dunn and midfielder Julie Ertz. The roster also includes 14 players who will make their World Cup debut.
In its history, the U.S. Nation Team has won four Women’s World Cup titles. Rochester native Abby Wambach led the Nation Team to victory during the 2015 World Cup in Canada. Overall, she has competed in four World Cups: 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015.
