Community voices support and concern over Spencerport assistant principal’s protest video

SPENCERPORT, N.Y. (WHEC) — In Spencerport, controversy over the protests in Rochester now grips the school district.
Tuesday night, as the school board held its meeting, advocates demonstrated over the case of Spencerport teacher and assistant principal, Steve Lysenko.
Lysenko has been placed on leave after he posted a video from the protests in which he curses at police.
A statement from the school system says this incident has caused "disruption"
Some members of the community, including former students, picketed Tuesday to support him. Others showed up too, saying he should be fired.

"It’s not the fact that he was swearing on the video," 2019 Spencerport graduate Jeanine Davis-Martinez said. "He wasn’t on school property. He was on public property, and he has the right to say what he wants for his first amendment."
At Spencerport schools, Lysenko has been involved in the DASH2Change, which focuses on racial injustice, and also ran a racism summit.
