LinkedIn confirms scraped data from 550M users for sale on hacker site

(NBCNC) — LinkedIn confirms that information scraped from about 500 million of its user profiles is part of a database for sale on a website popular with hackers.

A report by cybersecurity news site Cybernews says LinkedIn user IDs, names, email addresses, other identifying markers and links to other social media profiles were up for auction.

According to a statement from LinkedIn, the information is "an aggregation of data from a number of websites and companies" and that the data from LinkedIn users includes only information that people listed publicly in their profiles.

The professional social media site, which is owned by Microsoft, added "this was not a LinkedIn data breach, and no private member account data from LinkedIn was included in what we’ve been able to review."

LinkedIn had 630 million registered members in 200 countries as of June 2019.
