Two people including pregnant woman die in Wayland rollover crash
WAYLAND, N.Y. — A van with 13 people inside rolled over in Wayland on Saturday morning, leaving two dead including a pregnant woman, said New York State Police in a news conference.
The Steuben County crash happened on I-390. State Police say a man died at the scene. While the pregnant woman has died, hospital staff were able to deliver her baby.
State Police say three families were traveling together in the van from Norristown, Pennsylvania to Niagara Falls for a vacation.
Ambulances took nine of the victims including the pregnant woman to Nicolas Noyes Hospital in Dansville. The baby is now at Strong Hospital. In addition, one victim was taken to St. James Hospital in Hornell and two more were airlifted to Strong Hospital.
A State Police investigation determined that the van was heading northbound on I-390 when the rear passenger tire had an issue. The driver lost control, causing the van to leave the roadway. The van went onto the west shoulder of the road and onto median. That caused the van to roll over multiple times before coming to rest.
State Police have not yet released the names or ages of the victims. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office along with multiple fire and EMS departments responded to the crash.
I-390 was closed in both directions from Wayland to Hornell Road in North Dansville. I-390 has since reopened.
