Neighbors concerned for their safety after shooting in Greece; Bullet struck family’s home

GREECE, N.Y. – People living in a Greece neighborhood are concerned about their safety after an 18-year-old was shot — and a bullet went flying into a home.

Dozens of neighbors gathered for a community meeting at Shorecliff Drive and Summit Hill to discuss action they would like to see taken to avoid any further violence from happening. They say it’s terrifying, and they want something done.

“I was standing outside … when I heard the pops go off and ducked into my neighbor’s house,” Victoria Hess said.

This area in Greece off Latta Road is known to be a quiet residential neighborhood. But Saturday night, the sound of gunshots rang out on Lyncourt Park.

Greece Police responded. They say an 18-year-old man was shot outside a house party.

Hess was standing outside when she heard the shots. She literally dodged the bullets. When she got home, she saw bullet holes outside and inside her home — and found a bullet.

“The bullet had entered through a living room window into an interior wall and was stuck in a computer screen monitor,” Hess said.

Hess showed the window the bullet came through — that went into her family room. She said her son and cat normally would be sitting on the sofa in front of that window.

Hess was at Monday night’s meeting to voice her concerns.

“I just want people to be responsible for their own actions and to understand when you are in an altercation it’s not worth anybody’s life, because it might not take the life of the person you are aiming at. It could’ve taken the lives of my kids,” she said.

Cheryl Crow lives right next door to the home where the house party took place. She says bullets went flying through her front yard and past a swing where her kids typically play.

“Luckily I had taken my kids to the movies and they weren’t out there to play at the time. And thank God, because had I not they would’ve been out there playing,” Crow said.

Police found bullet casings on Crow’s front lawn, and also in the street in front of her driveway.

“We’re just frustrated; we want our neighborhood to be safe for our kids. There are at least 30 kids that play on these streets all day riding their bikes,” Crow said.

Brendan Bulson, one of the meeting organizers, said it’s terrifying, and the people in the area are coming together to discuss what can be done to prevent this from happening again.

“There’s a lot of people who are really scared,” he said. “I talked to a bunch of neighbors over the past two days. Some said they were hiding down in their basement when we were informing people about the meeting tonight. Some people were scared to answer the door. So there’s a lot of fear going on right now.”

So far, no arrests have been made. the 18-year-old man survived and is expected to recover. Police say he and others they have interviewed have not cooperated with their investigation. Greece Police at the meeting said they couldn’t comment.
