Man convicted of trying to kill RPD officer in 2020.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Monroe County jury found a 55-year-old Rochester man guilty Thursday of trying to kill a city police officer by firing four shots at him.

James Hunter was convicted of attempted aggravated murder of a police officer and burgarly in the first degree, along with additional weapons and stolen property crimes.

Hunter was charged in the December 22, 2020, shooting of RPD officer Bryan Sheridan who was hit twice, including in the neck. Sheridan survived his injuries after hospitalization.

“Officer Sheridan was hit in the neck and will forever live with a bullet lodged near his spine because of the cowardly actions of James Hunter," said First Assistant District Attorney Perry Duckles

Hunter had an extensive criminal history and was caught breaking into a Hague Street home when the shooting happened. Hunter was previously convicted four times of robbery according to the New York State Department of Corrections. He has been in and out of the prison system since 1983. After being released from prison in 2004, he received a lifetime of parole.
