PENFIELD, N.Y. (WHEC) – Haircuts for a hero immediately came to mind for Tim Hicks, who owns Olde Towne Barber Company in Penfield.
"It’s not a pro-police, anti-police, it’s not a label it’s just a human thing,” Hicks said.
With a pair of shears or buzz clippers, Hicks has a mission to make a change.
"People are killing each other for nothing, and it’s disgusting and I just want to bring some sort of joy into this world however I can.”
Hicks gave out free haircuts in honor of fallen Rochester Police officer Tony Mazurkiewicz, who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Hicks is donating all funds raised to the officer’s family. Hicks says, he’ll never forget the day Tony lost his life trying to protect the community.
"One of my long-time customers, he actually works with the wife of the fallen officer. He was supposed to come in for a haircut that day and canceled and I had no idea what was going on at the time so this hits pretty close.”
Hicks says, his hands can only do so much. He hopes the community’s takeaway is that humanity is important.
"Whether the cameras are here or not, I’m here cutting hair and doing what I wish someone would do for my family if I was god forbid murdered or injured I’m just trying to do what’s right.”
Hicks says he plans on doing free haircuts every year in Tony’s honor.
