15-year-old shot in gunfire that killed RPD officer says it’s ‘really scary because I was just in my own house’

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — When RPD says Kelvin J. Vickers fired at two police officers 16 times last Thursday night, four of those bullets went into a home behind them.

And one of those bullets hit a teenage girl who was sitting with her family in their living room.

"Can you show me?" I asked Tamaia Walker when I asked her where she was hit.

She tried to roll her sleeve up showing the back of her right arm.

"The shirt is probably a little too tight," she said.

A photo shows the bullet cut the back of her arm. It appeared to be a long burn mark.

Brean: "Did you know what happened to you when you got hit?"

Walker: "At first I was really scared, I was just shocked. At first, I was thinking that if I got shot it would have hurt a lot more even though it did hurt."

Her father Aleen Hall says the family thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks.

Then they realized what they actually were.

"All I thought was she got hit. And I thought – oh my God," her father Aleen Hall said. "So I didn’t know if I should call 911 but [police] were already outside so I waved them down and then ended up rendering aid to her."

Hall says three bullets went into the kitchen of their home. It was the bullet that pierced the front foyer and then a living room wall that hit Tamaia.

Brean: "How are you feeling now?"

Walker: "I’m still really scared like shaken up because it’s really scary because I was just in my own house and it was like so sudden and like scared. But also relieved that it was really anything more than what it was."

"For me I know I could hold my own. But for my kids, we still got to work. I got to work and they still have to come home from school so it’s kind of nerve-wracking for them," Hall said. "As a parent, we go to work so we can provide for them. And to know that they’re not safe while we’re trying to provide for them it’s kind of not mind-settling."

Tamaia is 15 years old and a student at Edison Tech. She told me she wants to be a nurse.

Her gunshot injury is the assault charge Vickers is facing.

Vickers is scheduled to be in Rochester City Court at 11 a.m. Wednesday. If there is a vote by the grand jury on any charge against Vickers prior to 11 a.m., the hearing will be canceled.
