ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester Police are investigating a mid-morning shooting in the Beechwood neighborhood.
Rochester Police responded around 11:20 a.m. Monday to Ellison Street off of Bay Street for the report of a man shot.
Shortly after that, a man in his 30s went by private car to Rochester General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
“He’s currently being treated for what’s considered to be non-life-threatening injuries,” Capt. Greg Bello said.
“While our officers were on the scene working through their primary investigation, they became alerted to a second victim that had been shot that was in the backyard of a vacant house on this street,” he said.
That man, also in his 30s, was taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries that were originally considered life-threatening. His condition has since improved.
People who live in the neighborhood are frustrated to deal with yet another gun crime in their community.
“Sadly, I’m not surprised because of the geographic area, and just some stuff going on that we’re not aware of what the reasons are, but we cringe every time we hear another one has happened,” neighbor Cheryl Robinson said. “It’s too much. We need to work together to figure it out so it will stop.”
That’s what police hope to do, too.
“Ellison Street is generally a quiet street, a calmer street, so you know, certainly, it’s abnormal for this neighborhood, absolutely, and that’s one of the reasons we’re looking into: to figure out what happened here so we can work towards solving this crime as well.”
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 911.
